Over on the west coast, Washington Governor Jay Inslee has ordered a state-wide activation of the National Guard after reports of mass vandalism and thefts across multiple cities.
Mr Inslee had previously authorized the deployment of 600 troops, split between Seattle and Bellevue. But his most recent order will put more boots on the ground.
“We must not let these illegal and dangerous actions detract from the anger so many feel at the deep injustice laid so ugly and bare by the death of George Floyd,” he said.
“But we also will not turn away from our responsibility to protect the residents of our state.”
On Saturday night people smashed store fronts in central Seattle, with reports of similar incidents in Bellevue, Spokane, Tukwila and Renton on Sunday.
